Gematria is an ancient alphanumeric code system used by Rabbinic scholars to explore the hidden meaning of the Hebrew Bible. It assigns numerical values to letters of the Hebrew alphabet and then these numerical values can be added together to form words or phrases have significant meaning in a given context.
In essence, Gematria is a numerological cipher which allows for deeper understanding of complex concepts in the sacred text. It uses integers rather than symbols, with each letter being given its own unique numeric value. In theory, any word or phrase can be associated with a numerical formula and then translated to its symbolic meaning; this process is known as "gematriya."
Gematria is based on the sequence of numbers from one (א) to nine (ת). Each letter in the Hebrew alphabet represents a single number, beginning with Aleph (א), which corresponds with one, through Tav (ת), which corresponds with nine. All remaining letters are given two-digit numbers based off these 9 primary values. For example, Bet (בּ) has a value of two and Zayin (ז) has a value of seven. For example, Bet-Yod (בי) would be 12 because one plus two equals three so it would be converted into its one digit form: two multiplied by six equals twelve. Words are then calculated by adding together all their corresponding numerals.
Once a word or phrase is assigned its numerical value it can be compared to other parts of the text as well as other concepts within Judaism to uncover new revelations about its general meaning. This process often reveals surprising connections between seemingly disparate topics – for instance when finding out that both Noah's name and "ark" share the same gematria value of 248 – revealing deeper spiritual truths about those individuals and ideas that we may not have noticed before.
